UK Fuel Market Update – 19th August 2026
Q: What is happening to fuel prices?
A: Oil markets have strengthened again. Brent crude is around $91–92 per barrel, its highest level for roughly three weeks, because disruption and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten supplies. Russian exports are also reportedly below planned levels. This is keeping UK diesel and gas-oil prices under upward pressure.
Q: Are prices likely to fall soon?
A: A fall is possible if geopolitical tensions ease, but the immediate market remains highly volatile. The IEA reported exceptionally large movements in crude prices during July, alongside stronger diesel refining margins. In plain English: there is currently more risk of sudden price changes than normal, so waiting for a substantial reduction is a gamble.
Q: Why are delivered prices changing so quickly?
A: Delivered red-diesel prices reflect wholesale gas oil, crude oil, sterling’s value against the dollar, supply availability, distribution costs and order size. Sterling is reasonably firm at around $1.35, which provides some protection, but it is not currently enough to offset the rise in oil prices.
Q: Has the red-diesel duty changed?
A: Yes. The rebated duty rate was reduced by 3.7p per litre from 15 June, bringing it to 6.48p per litre until 31 December 2026. That reduction is already incorporated into current pricing; it does not shield buyers from movements in the underlying wholesale market.
