The figures in the charts are an indication only and reflect levels traded on Wednesday.
There will not be a Weekly Straights Update next week.

Hipro Soya

  • In Friday’s USDA report old crop (25/26) remained unchanged, new crop (26/27), the crop itself increased.
  • Production nudged up by 16 million bushels, as the yield came in slightly higher than expected.
  • The USDA also decided the US would export more, mostly on stronger expected demand from China. TBC!
  • Globally, the big three everyone watches, Brazil and Argentina and China’s imports were exactly as they were in August.
  • US harvest is running slightly ahead of the 5 year average at 6% complete.
  • Eyes are now on futures and the South American weather, with Brazilian planting now underway
  • A mixed weather outlook in Brazil with favourable rain in the south against El Nino-linked dryness in the north.
Rapemeal

  • Rapemeal has followed soya up this week.
  • The UK is very tight with spot disappearing until asa October.
  • Both Erith and Liverpool have closed fixings until the last days of October.
  • Exports out of Ukraine and Rhine river levels continue to keep prices firm.
  • Winter demand will begin imminently, which will only add fuel to the fire.
 Soya hulls

  • Supply is tightening which has pushed prices up and yet demand continues to strengthen.
  • Shipments are due in November, but supply of asa Nov could cause some issues if arrivals don’t go to plan and tight supply is expected into January.
  • Even if the global market price does ease, availability in the UK could still be an issue, therefore putting a floor in prices, the ceiling is yet to be determined.
Distillers

  • As with the rest of the protein complex prices are firming.
  • News is still awaited as to whether Ensus will run beyond October.
Sugarbeet
  • Home produced offers are expected imminently.
 Wheat/Barley

  • Wheat markets continued to ease last week, with UK feed wheat down £2.75/T on the week.
  • Paris wheat also fell 2.1% and Chicago was 1.2% lower.
  • Early optimism on potential Russia-Ukraine talks continued to weigh on prices, but renewed attacks on Black Sea infrastructure have highlighted that significant disruption to grain exports remain.
  • Friday’s USDA WASDE added further pressure to the markets, unexpectedly increasing its forecast for 26/27 global wheat, due to improved production expectations in Australia and Canada.
  • Russia wheat export expectations have been reduced to 41.4MMT compared to 48MMT last year.
  • Continued disruption is also changing barley trade flows, with the EU exporting 887KT to Saudi Arabia since July compared to 411KT last year.
  • Overall the larger global wheat balance sheet is currently providing some downward pressure, but the market remains sensitive to developments in the Black Sea.
  • For the UK feed markets, continued strong demand for European barley exports and any further disruption to Russian or Ukrainian grain flow should provide some underlying support to both wheat and barley prices.
And finally, totally irrelevant but quite interesting facts of the week…

The Royal Mint is a cashless workplace and the first pair of Nike trainers was made in a waffle iron.
