  • Soybeans in the US continue to benefit from good weather with 66% rated good/excellent.
  • Funds continued to sell their long positions.
  • The WASDE report last week left US and global ending stocks mostly unchanged for 26/27, as expected.
  • Chinese buying is lacklustre with no new crop demand for US beans despite them being the best value.
  • South American premiums remain strong and may need to come lower in order to capture market demand.
  • Whilst crude oil prices have reduced it will take a little time for this to be fully reflected in our prices due to the lag in physical freight rates.

  • Values continued to slide tracking wider Ag markets, but also reflected crushers looking to lock in sales particularly on new crop meal.
  • Versus soya, rapemeal is beginning to look pretty competitive for new crop.
  • Erith sits at 59% of soya prices for Aug/Oct and 64% for the winter; Liverpool sits at 68% for Aug/Oct and 72% for the winter.

  • A steadier week for hulls as values seem to have found a comfortable level for the time being.
  • Shippers expect to see stronger demand globally for hulls than in previous years due to the lack of sugarbeet going forward.
  • This is likely to provide a base for prices.

  • Another week of lower values as US producers drop prices to try and find some demand.
  • There is talk of some plants turning the driers back on as they are struggling to find domestic demand for the wet product.
  • Ethanol margins are holding in positive territory despite the drop in crude oil values and realistically production will maintain even if margins slide into negative territory and they will still need a home for the distillers grains.
  • But they will push this as wet product if they can, which could provide a base to winter values.

  • Again, no change on this market with minimal offers for old crop and at expensive values.
  • No offers on new crop.

  • There was a little more price pressure on UK values as weather continued to be favourable in the US and risk-off sentiment grew, meaning funds continued to exit the Agri commodities markets.
  • The USDA WASDE report brought  a little support to the market though, as wheat stocks for 26/27 were reduced beyond expectations, down from 762 million bushels last month to 744 million bushels.
  • Global ending stocks were almost unchanged.
  • Fund are now entering short positions for CBOT wheat, suggesting they anticipate further downside.
  • Conditions across Europe have improved with some additional rainfall helping recovery from recent hot and dry spells.

And finally, totally irrelevant but quite interesting facts of the week…Clarence Birdseye founded his company with $7, which he spent on blocks of ice and an electric fan and Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Dr Pepper were all invented by pharmacists.
