  • A mixed week as tighter supply in the south of the UK has started to impact on prices but CBOT continued to challenge the $300 mark.
  • Supply is expected to remain tighter in the south due to delays with shipments into one of the ports, meaning nearby prices are likely to hold firmer.
  • US crops are doing well with good growing conditions and are 93% emerged and rated 66% good/excellent.
  • There was a brief spark to US prices as China came into buy several cargoes of new crop beans, (resulting in lower demand from China for South American beans and therefore lower South American prices).
  • The trade seems to have given up on increased Chinese buying of old crop beans – keeping prices under pressure.

  • Prices continued to slip downward with pressure from soymeal prices as well as crushers looking to try and find some demand, which has happened in Europe in the past couple of days, so levels are starting to firm on European values.
  • Values look competitive against soya on new crop – Erith sits at 62% Aug/Apr vs soya and Liverpool 70% for Aug/Apr.
  • Crushers have been known to value rapemeal lower than this when they really need to sell meal, but it’s not a regular occurrence.
  • So it feels more likely that any further downside need to form pressure from the soya market.

  • Prices held steady having found a level where they are placing well into rations.
  • It’s highly likely there will be a move across from sugarbeet to hulls in countries who would typically be more sugarbeet users.
  • With forage being plentiful throughout the UK this year, prices will need to remain competitive to find homes.

  • Values moved lower on the week as US prices continued to ease with producers looking for homes for product.
  • US producers had been looking to move more wet product (and gain more credits by not drying the by-product), but homes are limited to the immediate vicinity of plants, proving tricky of late.
  • No news on Ensus running beyond July, but with improved relations between the US and Iran, the likelihood of an end to government support is increasing.

  • Again, no change on this market with minimal offers for old crop and at expensive values.
  • There is an expectation that there will be a tighter supply on new crop than in previous years and pricing could be tricky due to a lack of supply vs overall cheaper commodity prices.

  • London wheat prices were slightly firmer week on week due to a mixed picture of good weather conditions in the US keeping a lid on prices, but heatwaves across Europe raises questions on the impacts of yield and quality.
  • Winter crops are nearing maturity in the UK and across Europe so the impact should be minimal at this point.
  • Harvest is just beginning across the Channel with France 4% complete on winter barley.
  • Black Sea and eastern European exports remain competitive as strong production estimates are likely to keep it that way.
  • Old crop availability is tighter as new crop approaches so there is some variation in pricing, depending on the supply situation.

And finally, totally irrelevant but quite interesting facts of the week…For Spider-Man to climb buildings like a gecko would require size 89 feet and Wellington boots were designed by Germans, named by an Irishman, manufactured by an American and first worn by French peasants.
