I’ve had many conversations in the last couple of weeks around the price of fertiliser Vs cropping plans. It’s definitely not easy to know what to do for the next growing season. At the AGM on the 3rd of June there will be a couple of relevant presentations. One from Edward Earnshaw from Just farm, who will give the very latest update on SFI and Andrew Stillwell from Bartholomews on Fertiliser markets Vs Crop production markets. I will give an update on their main points in the next issue.

If you can’t make it to the AGM on the 3rd of June, come and find me and some of the Orion Board on the County Insurance stand at Cereals 2026

Events

Cereals 10th-11th June at Diddly Squat Farm

Orion Farming will be attending the Cereals event this June. We are pleased to be working with our long-term partners, County Insurance. They have been kind enough to share their stand with us.

We will both be working under the theme ‘Protecting Your Future’
We will be ready to chat through all the ways Orion and County Insurance Services Ltd can help shield farmers from uncertainty and volitivity of markets and risks.

County Insurance will have some guest speakers on the stand as well as some very fine catering!

Come and chat to us on the stand, we would be very pleased to meet you!

Fertiliser Update

We saw a slight re set of Nitram prices last week. There was a limited amount available at £495/ t for a July/ August delivery.  As I am writing this there has not been a full new season reset of pricing and I feel we are unlikely to see one now. Urea has remained around just below £595/t for a while now, its price going forward will very much depend on what happens with the Iran war and he volumes that India buys in the coming months. I’m always happy to talk things through.

Feed and Livestock

Game feed reminder
For those members intending to purchase game feed this season, ForFarmers are the Group’s preferred supplier for this season’s game feed and they now have a dedicated telephone number should you wish to place an order, the telephone number for game feed is 0330 678 1083. If you require any further information or advice, please contact either Jamie Horner 07341 883162 or Lauren Appleby 07387 526426.

Brewers Grains
One of the Group’s suppliers is now in a position to offer brewers grains throughout the summer from June to October. Please bear in mind that they can only supply 20T rigid loads. Should you require more information or wish to place an order, please contact the office for a firm price and availability.

Envirolac
For members who use a palm oil-based calcium soap as part of their ration and are looking for ways to reduce their feed carbon footprint, Envirolac is an option worth considering. Manufactured from locally sourced vegetable oils, together with marine oils, it can reduce the feed carbon footprint by more than 10%, while returning impressive milk yield increases, namely 0.6kg increase in milk yield as well as a lift in butterfat production from 3.85% to 4.01%, following a successful trial undertaken at the University of Nottingham. A detailed report as well as prices are available from the office.

Wynngold Boost
For those members who rear beef calves rather than dairy replacements, Wynnstay can offer Wynngold Boost, a whey-based milk powder containing 20% protein, 19% oil and 500mg/kg vit. Boost is manufactured, by Volac, exclusively for Wynnstay. Boost has been formulated for optimum digestibility and to provide a cost-effective performance prominently for beef. The high vitamin E content helps supports the calf’s developing immune system especially through periods of stress.

Weekly Update
Several members like to keep an eye on how the straights markets are performing, especially at the moment with unprecedented volatility in the markets. To that end, a weekly update is sent via email every Thursday to Members using straights feeds, with guide prices for all main feed commodities. It tracks price and currency changes to provide information and updates on market changes, as well as a brief market report highlighting how the major commodities are performing globally and any impact that might have on the domestic market. And finally you also get the totally irrelevant but quite interesting facts weekly instead of monthly!! Please contact the office if you would like to be added to the distribution list to receive this information,
