  • There were some sales to China of new crop US beans, but countered by favourable growing conditions in the US despite the warmer temperatures.
  • Funds have continued to reduce their long positions on the soy complex.
  • The next stock and acreage report is expected to increase soybean acreage.
  • It’s worth noting that typically in previous years there have been more corn acres found than expected and this has historically been supportive to the soybean market.
  • There’s tighter supplies in the UK due in part to some shipment delays in the UK and also there’s a strike in Argentina.
  • It’s also been announced the UK government intends to bring in deforestation regulations for soya (and other products) in 2027, also known as UK FRC.
  • This in effect will put the UK with EUDR which is due to come into for Europe at the end of December.
  • It seems the UK version requires all businesses with a turnover of £1 million or more that use these products, will need to carry out due diligence, (geolocation data to show no deforestation).
  • This is slightly different to EUDR as they only require the company placing the product on the EU market, initially has to complete the checks.
  • There will be consultations going forward on the details and implementation of this.
  • The unknown is what cost this will come at – as previous EUDR discussions many shippers have not known how to value compliant-soya.

  • Values were supported over the past week by increased demand in Europe as buyers came on to put cover on, alongside a steady soya market.
  • Early harvest reports across Europe are on the poorer side for yields, but it’s still early, so a better picture of European production needs to be seen.
  • Canadian plantings are still running behind, but expectation is for strong yields.
  • With the unknowns surrounding EUDR/FRC compliant soya from January onwards, increased demand may be seen in the UK and Europe for meal in 2027 as feed producers and farmers look to secure proteins with a certainty of pricing.

  • A steady week again for hulls as they continue to find a place in rations vs sugarbeet.
  • Demand for hulls is expected to be stronger going forward due to the reduced supply of sugarbeet in the current season and also in new crop. This will likely keep a base in prices.
  • Also worth noting is that hulls are included in the EUDR sustainability regulations and will also be included in the UK version next year.

  • Prices held steady vs last week as they reached levels that attracted some reasonable interest for summer and next winter.
  • As yet there been no big importers come in to price.
  • The risk in waiting for a bit more out of prices is that they will come in and buy up the market, resulting in higher prices.
  • Corn crops are good in the US, but there is some expectation that the acreage could be lower, which combined with the struggle of the EU crops could push by-product prices higher.

  • Yet again, no change.

  • A mixed week on grain.
  • Supporting the market was the European heatwave which has created some debate as to whether actually this shouldn’t impact wheat/barley too much as harvest is nigh on here.
  • US crops are doing well with reasonable rains, but some higher temperatures incoming, though winter wheat harvest is now at 48% complete.
  • There is more harvest pressure coming to the market from the northern hemisphere as well as abundant Black Sea supplies keeping prices under further pressure.

And finally, totally irrelevant but quite interesting facts of the week…Ladybirds can fly as fast as racehorses can run and when threatened, a limpet can run away at the speed of two inches an hour.
