Orion Farming Fuel Q & A

Q: What is happening with crude oil this week?
A: Brent crude has eased slightly today, falling to around $108 to $109 per barrel, after recent sharp rises linked to Middle East supply concerns. The market remains nervous, with analysts still warning that disruption around the Strait of Hormuz could keep prices volatile.

Q: Why does this matter for UK farming fuel?
A: Red diesel and gas oil prices are heavily influenced by crude oil, refining costs, currency movements and distribution pressures. Even when crude falls back slightly, farm fuel prices do not always move down immediately, especially when supply risk is still being priced into the market.

Q: Is there any relief for farmers yet?
A: There has been a small easing in crude prices, but it is too early to call this a clear downward trend. Fuel costs remain significantly higher than last year, and April figures referenced in Parliament put red diesel at around 123.7p per litre, showing the scale of the pressure on farm businesses.

Q: What should farmers watch most closely now?
A: The key things to watch are Brent crude movements, Middle East shipping disruption, sterling against the dollar, and whether wholesale diesel prices start to soften. For now, the market remains fragile rather than settled.
