Your Farm Fuel: Navigating the Brent Crude See-Saw
The key story for oil over the last 10 days has been a battle between concerning economic data and fresh geopolitical flare-ups. Brent Crude has been volatile, bouncing between roughly $65 and $70, as traders weigh these conflicting signals daily.
The most significant event was yesterday's (July 15th) economic data release from China, which showed their economy grew slightly faster than expected in the second quarter. This provided a brief lift to prices, as a healthier Chinese economy means stronger demand for fuel. This was offset, however, by a US inflation report that was slightly higher than anticipated, raising minor concerns that the Federal Reserve might not lower interest rates, which can strengthen the dollar and make oil more expensive.
The other major factor has been increased tension in the Red Sea. A fresh series of attacks on shipping has reintroduced a "risk premium" to the price. This has a direct, albeit small, impact on the cost of moving oil and adds to market nervousness.
For your farm, this means the underlying weak demand story that has kept prices low is being tested. The key takeaway from the last 10 days is that while economic worries are capping any major price rises, the market is highly sensitive to supply-side risks. Any escalation in the Red Sea could quickly add a few dollars to a barrel, a cost that would translate to higher prices at the pump within a fortnight. The crucial EIA stocks report is due later today and will set the immediate tone.
