Orion Farming Fuel Q & A
Q:What is Brent crude doing this week?
A: Brent is trading around $98 to $99 per barrel this week. Reuters reported Brent at $98.47 on 22 April and later at $99.21, showing that the market is still moving sharply on Middle East disruption rather than settling properly.
Q: What is affecting fuel supply right now?
A: The main issue remains the Strait of Hormuz. It normally handles about 20% of global oil and LNG supplies, but shipping has been heavily disrupted, with Reuters reporting traffic largely at a standstill and only three vessels passing through in a 24-hour period. There were also reports of gunfire attacks on container ships and vessel seizures, which is keeping supply concerns front and centre.
Q: What does that mean for farming fuel costs?
A: It means farming fuel costs are likely to stay firm and volatile. Even where crude eases slightly, the supply risk premium is still there because physical flows through a key global route remain disrupted, so diesel and gasoil markets are unlikely to relax quickly.
Q: What should UK farmers watch most closely?
A: Watch whether shipping through Hormuz starts to move properly again, whether the ceasefire extension holds in practice, and whether Brent pushes back above $100 per barrel. Those are the clearest signals for whether fuel markets calm down or get jumpy again.
